Traders in Benue State are beaming with excitement as a wave of increased patronage sweeps through markets in Makurdi ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration. From food vendors to clothing merchants, the festive spirit is translating into booming business, bringing relief after months of economic strain.

Aliyu Yakubu, a rice seller at the popular Wurukum Market, could barely hide his delight. "Business has been good so far," he told reporters. "People are stocking up early for Sallah, and the drop in prices is helping too."

Yakubu revealed that the cost of a bushel of rice had fallen from ₦35,000 to between ₦25,000 and ₦28,000, depending on quality. Nearby, Ibrahim Hassan, a foodstuff trader, confirmed the trend, noting that beans previously selling for ₦2,300 per measure now go for as low as ₦1,800.

Beyond food, the demand for traditional attire is also on the rise. Aisha Musa, who deals in fabrics and accessories, said customers were already shopping for new outfits. "Sallah is a time for dressing well, and we’re seeing more buyers than usual," she said.

Mary Udende, a household goods seller, added that traders were offering discounts to ease the burden on customers. "We know times are tough, so we’re trying to help where we can," she explained.

For buyers like Peter Ogbe, the current price stability is a rare but pleasant surprise. "During other festivities, prices shoot up unreasonably," he said. "This time, things are different some items are even cheaper. I hope it lasts."

While traders credit the improved sales to increased demand and slight price drops, customers are simply grateful for a season of affordability. As Makurdi buzzes with Sallah preparations, the mood in the markets is one of shared joy a rare win in challenging times.
