Hon. Samson Nunayon Apata, Managing Director/CEO of Eko Destination Ltd and Eko Tourism Online Radio and National Vice President of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), has announced a major push to reposition the historic town of Badagry as a top travel destination in Nigeria.
Speaking exclusively to News Peddlers during a visit to the Badagry Heritage Museum with students from Caleb British International School, Lekki, Apata expressed his commitment to breathing new life into Badagry’s tourism industry.
“For some time now, Badagry Tourism has fallen below expectations, but as ATPN Vice-President, I am determined to bring about a remarkable change,” Apata declared. “Badagry is my heritage, and we have yet to tap into its enormous potential. I will use all my resources and influence to boost tourism here.”
A former Supervisor for Tourism in Badagry Local Government, Apata has long been an advocate for promoting the town’s rich history and cultural assets. His latest initiative includes collaborating with key stakeholders. He commended Mr. Peter Mesewaku, the Directors in charge of Badagry Heritage Museum for his efforts to enhance Badagry’s tourism.
“I commend Mr. Mesewaku’s efforts in preserving our heritage, but there is still much work ahead,” Apata noted. “Together with other stakeholders, we will ensure Badagry tourism reaches its rightful place on the global map.”
Badagry, known for its deep historical roots in the transatlantic slave trade, boasts landmarks like, Badagry Heritage Museum, Slave Relics Museum, Vlekete Slave Market, First Storey Building in Nigeria, Seriki Abass Slave Baracoon.
Despite these attractions, the sector has struggled with inadequate promotion and infrastructure. Apata’s intervention signals hope for a resurgence.
