Hon. Bonu Solomon Saanu, the Lagos State House of Assembly Member representing Badagry Constituency I, has officially announced that the 2025 edition of the Badagry Door of Return celebration will take place on October 18, 2025.
The lawmaker made the announcement on his official Facebook page earlier today, sparking excitement among cultural enthusiasts, historians, and tourism stakeholders.
The Door of Return is a symbolic monument in Badagry, mirroring Ghana’s Door of No Return, and serves as a powerful reminder of the transatlantic slave trade while promoting reconciliation and heritage tourism. Hon. Solomon shared updates from his recent visit to the construction site of the permanent Door of Return structure, a project recently approved by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
During the site inspection, Hon. Solomon was joined by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), who has been instrumental in fostering diaspora engagement and cultural preservation. The lawmaker praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to tourism, stating, “This iconic monument will undoubtedly promote tourism in Lagos State and showcase Badagry’s rich history.”
The Door of Return initiative is expected to attract global attention, positioning Badagry as a key destination for cultural tourism, historical education, and diaspora homecomings. Hon. Solomon emphasized that the project aligns with Lagos State’s broader vision of preserving heritage sites while boosting economic opportunities for local communities.
With the official date now set, preparations are underway to ensure a grand and memorable celebration on October 18, 2025. The event is anticipated to feature cultural performances, historical reenactments, and international participation, reinforcing Badagry’s significance in the African diaspora narrative.
