Abayomi Medemaku |
Barr. Abayomi Noah Medemaku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate for Badagry Local Government, has made a bold declaration, stating that Badagry possesses untapped tourism potential greater than all European states and even Jerusalem.
In an exclusive interview with News Peddlers, Medemaku revealed his ambitious plans to transform Badagry into a global tourism hub if elected.
Having traveled to over 15 European countries and seven African nations, Medemaku compared Badagry’s rich heritage and natural attractions to popular destinations like the Czech Republic, Germany, and Jerusalem.
"I toured the Czech Republic with a fellow Badagry indigene, and we realized they generate massive revenue from tourism despite having fewer natural and cultural assets than Badagry," he said.
"This convinced me that with the right leadership, Badagry can outperform these destinations."
Medemaku criticized the current lack of investment in Badagry’s tourism sector by the local government, despite Lagos State’s efforts. He emphasized the need for grassroots involvement, proposing initiatives such as empowering local artisans, market women, and food vendors to showcase Badagry’s unique delicacies like Ajongun elepo, Abodo, and Aplan.
"We will create a dedicated tourist market separate from Agbalata, where visitors can buy crafts, souvenirs, and experience our culture firsthand," he explained.
Beyond economic benefits, Medemaku believes tourism development will drastically reduce unemployment in Badagry. "Countries like Sweden and Israel thrive on tourism despite limited natural resources.
Badagry, with its rich history, slave trade relics, beaches, and festivals, has far more to offer," he argued. He also promised to introduce modern transportation systems to enhance accessibility for tourists.
Medemaku’s vision positions Badagry as a future rival to global tourism giants. "Jerusalem attracts pilgrims, but Badagry’s cultural wealth is unmatched. We won’t wait for government money before harnessing our heritage to create jobs and wealth," he declared.
