A shocking new report by Amnesty International reveals that more than 10,000 Nigerians have been killed and 672 villages destroyed since President Bola Tinubu took office two years ago.

The human rights group warns of a "looming humanitarian disaster" as violence spirals across northern states.

According to the report, 10,217 people have been murdered in brutal armed attacks across Benue, Edo, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Sokoto, and Zamfara states since May 29, 2023. Benue suffered the worst bloodshed, with 6,896 deaths, followed by Plateau with 2,630 fatalities.

Gunmen and bandits have razed entire communities, forcing mass displacement and worsening food insecurity. Despite Tinubu’s campaign promises to improve security, new deadly militias like Lakurawa (Sokoto/Kebbi) and Mamuda (Kwara) have emerged, unleashing terror on defenseless villagers.

"The government has failed Nigerians," declared Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International Nigeria’s Director. "Instead of safety, citizens face escalating killings, kidnappings, and unchecked violence."

The report highlights rising insecurity in Borno, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara, where armed gangs burn homes, kidnap civilians, and slaughter farmers. With no decisive action, Amnesty warns that Nigeria’s crisis could worsen, leaving millions trapped in fear.
