The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that 379,997 candidates from Lagos and the five South-East states will retake the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) following technical errors during the initial test.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, made the emotional announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, apologizing in tears and taking full responsibility for the lapses.
Oloyede explained that a software malfunction affected exam questions in 157 out of 882 centers, primarily in Lagos (65 centers, 206,610 candidates) and the South-East (92 centers, 173,387 candidates).
Despite pre-exam testing, an undetected server update failure led to unshuffled question options, impacting fairness. The issue was fixed by April 29, but some candidates had already taken the flawed test.
Affected candidates will receive SMS and email notifications with new exam dates (starting May 16).
They must reprint their exam slips for the retake.
JAMB assures enhanced measures to prevent future errors.
The announcement comes amid nationwide shock over the 2025 UTME results, where over 1.5 million candidates (70%) scored below 200/400. A law firm, John Nwobodo & Associates, has even demanded the release of exam questions, citing potential software malfunctions.
"I hold myself responsible... I unreservedly apologize for the trauma caused," the Registrar said, stressing JAMB’s commitment to transparency and fairness.
