In a landmark move set to reshape the tourism landscape of South West Nigeria, the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN) has officially inaugurated its South West Executive Council (SWEC).
The newly formed team, comprising six state chapter chairmen and two principal officers, was unveiled during a high-profile ceremony attended by industry leaders, government officials, and tourism stakeholders.
The SWEC team, led by the National Vice President South West Region, Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon, is tasked with spearheading strategic initiatives to boost tourism development across the region.
With a mandate to foster collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth, the council aims to position South West Nigeria as a premier destination for domestic and international travelers. “This is a pivotal moment for our region,” declared Hon. Nunayon. “Together, we will unlock the untapped potential of our cultural heritage, natural attractions, and hospitality sector.”
The SWEC lineup features a diverse group of seasoned professionals, including:
- Dr. Lasisi Latifat (Chief of Staff)
- Alaketu Abiodun (Secretary to the Vice President)
- Alhaja Olabisi Kamar-Azeez (Lagos State Chapter)
- Dr. Kola Lawal (Oyo State Chapter)
- Olowookere Tolulola (Ondo State Chapter)
- Olujekun Oludayo (Ekiti State Chapter)
- Melutia Ogunremi (Ogun State Chapter)
- Hon. Rukayat Olatunbosun (Osun State Chapter)
Each member brings unique expertise in destination marketing, cultural tourism, and policy advocacy, ensuring a holistic approach to regional development.
The council outlined key focus areas, including:
1. Infrastructure Development: Upgrading tourism sites and improving accessibility.
2. Digital Transformation: Leveraging technology to promote destinations and streamline visitor experiences.
3. Community Engagement: Partnering with local stakeholders to preserve heritage and create jobs.
4. Security & Hospitality Standards: Enhancing safety protocols and service quality.
Industry leaders praised the SWEC’s formation as a “game-changer” for regional integration. Dr. Kola Lawal, Oyo State Chapter Chairman, emphasized, “Unity is our strength. By pooling resources and ideas, we can compete globally.” Meanwhile, Alhaja Olabisi Kamar-Azeez highlighted Lagos’s role as a gateway for international tourists, pledging to amplify marketing efforts.
The council announced plans for a South West Tourism Summit in Q3 2024, alongside partnerships with private investors and federal agencies. A unified digital platform to showcase the region’s attractions is also in the works.
Hon. Nunayon concluded with an appeal for collective support: “Tourism thrives on collaboration. We invite all stakeholders hoteliers, tour operators, and local communities to join us in this transformative journey.”
