Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for President Bola Tinubu to be the only candidate in the 2027 presidential election, citing his leadership in "setting Nigeria on the path of growth."

At the All Progressives Congress (APC) summit in Abuja on Thursday, Akpabio urged all political parties and Nigerians to support Tinubu’s re-election, claiming the president has delivered exceptional governance.

Akpabio made a striking proposal, stating: “I want to move that not only would President Tinubu be the sole candidate for the presidency in 2027, but he would also be the sole candidate for the whole Nigerian population.”

He argued that Tinubu’s administration has outperformed expectations, making him the best choice for Nigeria’s future. The Senate President also took a swipe at opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming they are in disarray.

“All other political parties have been turned into shreds. The PDP umbrella in my state has so many holes,” Akpabio remarked.

Akpabio praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, stating that Nigerians are “excited” about his leadership. He claimed citizens are eager to reward the president with a second term.

“Nigerians are saying that because you have done a difficult job well, it’s time for us to reward you by sending you back to the presidency,” he said.

However, this statement comes amid growing opposition efforts to form a coalition against Tinubu. Former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), revealed that opposition leaders have already begun strategizing to unseat Tinubu in 2027.

Akpabio’s remarks signal a strong push for Tinubu’s continuity, but political analysts suggest the proposal may face resistance from opposition parties and even within the APC. With two years until the election, Nigeria’s political landscape remains highly competitive.

Will Tinubu emerge as the sole candidate in 2027, or will opposition forces succeed in challenging his re-election? The debate is just beginning.
