Gbadebo Rhodes-vivour getting title in Badagry |
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, was on Saturday installed as the Obalefun-Agbaye of Obatala Worshippers Worldwide in Badagry.
The title was conferred by a group of traditional religion devotees led by Oba Adedokun Ayinla, the Alase Oosa Agbaye Worldwide.
Obatala, one of the most revered deities in Yoruba tradition, is celebrated as a symbol of wisdom and compassion.
During the ceremony in Ikoga, Badagry, Oba Ayinla explained that Yoruba traditional leaders unanimously approved the title for Rhodes-Vivour, with the Akran of Badagry, Menu Toyi I, granting official permission. The honor comes with a crown and staff of office—though the LP chieftain can only wear them during religious events.
"This title makes him a leader among Obatala devotees, but he must respect traditional hierarchy," Oba Ayinla clarified. "Even as a chief, the town’s traditional ruler remains supreme. This crown is for religious occasions only—not for challenging authority."
After prayers and blessings, Rhodes-Vivour received his staff of office and joyfully danced to cheers from worshippers.
In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude, pledging to uphold the responsibilities of the title. He was accompanied by his father, wife, friends, and LP supporters.
