Kogi Govt’s Ban on Political Gatherings Ignites Tension as Senator Vows to Proceed

The Kogi State Police Command has called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial District, citing security concerns.

State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, issued the directive on Tuesday through a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya.

According to the statement, the planned event contradicts the state government’s recent proclamation prohibiting political gatherings. The police warned that the rally could disrupt public peace.

The statement read: “Following intelligence reports on security threats and the state’s ban on rallies, the Kogi Police Command urges organizers to cancel the Okene event to maintain peace. Hoodlums may hijack the gathering, risking public safety.”

The Command emphasized its commitment to preserving peace, stating that violators would face legal consequences.

“The event poses a security risk, and we advise cancellation to prevent chaos. The full force of the law will be applied against anyone disrupting public order,” the statement added.

Despite the government’s ban, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan remains determined to proceed, describing her visit as a non-political Eid-el-Fitr celebration with constituents.

The standoff raises concerns over potential clashes as authorities and the senator remain at odds over the event’s legality.
