Segun Arinze |
Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Arinze has finally addressed lingering questions about his roots, revealing fascinating details about his multicultural heritage.
The renowned actor, best known for his iconic roles in Nigerian cinema, shared his family history in a recent interview on the QED Podcast Show, clarifying misconceptions about his origin.
A Blend of Yoruba and Igbo Heritage
Arinze disclosed that while his father is Yoruba, his mother is Igbo, making him a true representation of Nigeria’s diverse cultural blend. “I’m from Badagry, Ajara Vetho. My name is Aino Padonu,” he said. “My great-grandfather migrated to Onitsha, and though I was born there, I was brought back to Lagos. My father also had an Igbo name, and my mother named me Arinzechukwu.”
How 'Segun Arinze' Became His Stage Name
The actor also explained the origin of his stage name, revealing that it was a twist of fate. Initially performing as Segun Aino Padonu, the change of his name happened while signing with Premier Music in the 1990s.
“The director said ‘Segun Aino’ sounded like a Fuji or Juju artiste and asked if I had another name,” he recalled. Before he knew it, media outlets announced his signing as Segun Arinze—a name that stuck. “I asked, ‘Oga, what is this?’ but he said, ‘Leave it, it will work.’ And that’s how I got stuck with the name.”
Despite the name change, Arinze emphasized his strong ties to Badagry, where he frequently visits. His revelation highlights the rich cultural intersections that define many Nigerian families, breaking ethnic stereotypes.
Fans and followers have since praised the actor for his candidness, with many commending his pride in his dual heritage.
As discussions about identity continue in Nigeria, Arinze’s story serves as a reminder of the beautiful complexity of the nation’s cultural tapestry.
