Governor Monday Okpebholo |
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has announced the commencement of a grassroots campaign to secure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
The governor made the declaration on Wednesday in Benin while receiving Kaycee Osamwonyi, a state lawmaker who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Osamwonyi, representing Uhunmwonde Constituency and a member of the Edo House Committee on Budget and Appropriation, was formally presented to Governor Okpebholo by APC State Chairman Jarrett Tenebe. The governor hailed the defection as a significant boost for the ruling party, signaling a wave of incoming members.
In his welcome address, Governor Okpebholo praised Osamwonyi and other defectors for reinforcing the APC’s dominance in Edo. He assured them of an inclusive and progressive environment, stating: “Your return home strengthens our party. Soon, we’ll witness a carnival of defections as more people join our movement.”
The governor emphasized collaboration for development, particularly in Uhunmwonde, which he described as a priority area. “Together, we will unlock growth opportunities and improve lives across Edo,” he added.
Governor Okpebholo revealed that Edo is already laying the groundwork for Tinubu’s 2027 victory. *“The presidential election is near, and Edo is ready. We’ve started mobilizing support for President Tinubu’s re-election,”* he declared. He also urged youth participation, assuring them of empowerment within the APC.
APC State Chairman Tenebe credited the governor’s rapid developmental strides as the reason behind Osamwonyi’s defection. “The APC now holds a majority in the Edo Assembly because leaders like Osamwonyi recognize the governor’s impactful leadership,” he said.
In his remarks, Osamwonyi attributed his move to the deepening crisis within the PDP at all levels. *“The PDP’s internal conflicts forced my exit. Returning to the APC feels like a homecoming,”* he explained. He also commended the state government’s developmental projects in his constituency, affirming his decision to align with the ruling party for progress.
