President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State. The swearing-in ceremony took place at approximately 3:00 PM on Tuesday at the State House in Abuja.
The event was attended by key government officials, including the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; and the Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga. The ceremony marked a significant step in the administration’s efforts to address the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
Earlier on Tuesday, President Tinubu, in a national broadcast, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State. This decision led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. The move aims to restore stability and governance in the state amid escalating tensions.
Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who served as Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to his new role. His appointment is expected to pave the way for effective administration and peace-building efforts in Rivers State during this critical period.
As the Sole Administrator, Ibas will oversee the state’s affairs and work towards resolving the political challenges that have plagued the region. His military background and administrative expertise position him as a key figure in steering Rivers State toward stability and progress.
This development underscores the federal government’s commitment to addressing governance issues and ensuring the well-being of citizens in Rivers State. Stakeholders and residents alike will be watching closely as Ibas takes on this pivotal role in the state’s political landscape.
