The Ondo State Government has taken decisive action to address the rising insecurity in farm settlements targeted by suspected herdsmen.
In a swift response, the state has directed the Amotekun Corps to establish security posts in affected communities and deploy patrol teams to prevent further attacks.
The directive was issued by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, on Wednesday in Akure, while addressing protesters from several communities in the Akure North Local Government Area. The protesters had gathered to voice their concerns over the recent killing of farmers in the region.
Dr. Adelami assured the protesters that the state government is committed to restoring peace and security. He urged them to return to their communities and await further measures from the government. “Ondo State is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, but recent events threaten to disrupt this peace. Last week, the governor met with security heads to strategize on maintaining peace. While we cannot disclose all security plans, we are taking immediate steps to protect lives and property. As a temporary solution, we will establish Amotekun posts and increase patrols in the affected areas,” he stated.
The protesters, led by the Regent of Ademekun Community, Kemisola Adelowo, called on the government to act swiftly to address the escalating insecurity. Ms. Adelowo revealed that four farmers were killed by gunmen on Wednesday, leaving others too terrified to access their farmlands. She appealed to the government to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and to create a safe environment for farmers to resume their livelihoods.
The Ondo State Government’s decision to deploy Amotekun reflects its commitment to safeguarding its citizens and maintaining the state’s reputation as a peaceful haven. This move is expected to provide immediate relief to affected communities while the government works on long-term solutions to the security challenges.
As the state takes these critical steps, residents remain hopeful that peace will soon be restored, allowing farmers to return to their farmlands without fear. The establishment of Amotekun posts and increased patrols marks a significant step forward in the fight against banditry and insecurity in Ondo State.
