Hon. Sesi Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, has firmly rejected allegations linking him to fuel smuggling along Nigeria’s borders with Ghana and Togo. Describing the accusations as "baseless and malicious," he asserted that they are part of a targeted smear campaign by vested interests.

In a statement released by his Senior Legislative Aide, Faruk Tanko Tunga, from his Abuja office, Hon. Whingan clarified that his only involvement in border trade issues was his recent motion in the House, advocating for an investigation into the impact of smuggling on legitimate businesses and local livelihoods. The motion also called for scrutiny of the Nigerian Customs Service and its leadership to ensure transparency and restore public confidence.

"As a representative of a border community, Hon. Whingan has been vocal about the economic struggles of his constituents, especially the youth, who have been affected by the prolonged closure of the Nigeria–Benin border since 2019," the statement emphasized. "His focus remains on ensuring fair trade policies, not illicit activities."

The lawmaker also raised concerns over the alleged complicity of high-ranking customs officials in smuggling operations, particularly through alternative routes like Oja-Odan in Ogun State. Independent reports have implicated certain figures operating with impunity, yet authorities have taken minimal action to address the issue.

Hon. Whingan challenged his accusers to provide concrete evidence, reaffirming his commitment to advocating for policies that enhance the welfare of Badagry residents. "This smear campaign will not deter him from pushing for a transparent and prosperous economic environment for his people," Tunga stated.

He further urged stakeholders, the media, and the public to engage in fact-based discussions rather than spreading unverified claims. "Hon. Whingan remains steadfast in his legislative duty to hold the real culprits accountable," the statement concluded.

As the debate unfolds, political analysts will be closely monitoring the implications of these allegations and Whingan’s push for border trade reforms in the National Assembly.
