The residents of Farasinme, Badagry, Lagos State, have said the Nigerian Navy may be planning to return to the community after the youths repealed the officers in a fierce battle, seizing the Navy's boat and diver.
The confrontation between the youths of the border community and the Navy began early Thursday morning at 12am, January 23, 2025, when a handful of Nigerian Navy personnel stormed the community in an operation aimed at apprehending youth moving around with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
A reliable source told News Peddlers that the Navy has stormed our community early this morning, plunging the community into chaos as a fierce gun battle erupts between Nigerian Navy officers and community youths.
The youth leader told News Peddlers on phone conversation that "The officers stormed the community to intercept PMS, and they began to beat the people seriously, in the process, some youth resisted the beating, which was why the Navys started shooting in the air. The youths then ceased their both and the driver as the officers escaped.
"There is unconfirmed information that the Navy is regrouping to launch another attack on the community. I already told to the youths to stay calm as we are making efforts to resolve it." he said.
Confirming the report, Baale of Farasinme-Ojoko said "The youths resisted the violent officers who opened fire, resulting in gun battle.
“Despite all the shooting, the youths were able to get hold of the Beninese boat driver, who conveyed the officers, his boat and its engine while the officers ran away while still shooting,” he said.
The Baale of Farasinme-Gbenopo said, “Since there is no fuel supply to border communities like Farasinme, the youths usually buy petrol from filling stations in Badagry town and bring home for use, but today the Navy officers stormed the community through its lagoon and started shooting everywhere and beat many youths to stupor."
“Farasinme has never experienced this kind of violence before. Nobody is saying security should not arrest an offender, if there is any, but coming into the community to open fire is uncalled for.
It was also gathered that an informal agreement has been reached between the youths and the leadership of the navy to return all arrested petrol so that the boat driver, his boat, and its engine would be released.
All efforts to get the navy for comments at the time of filing this report proved abortive.
