Armed internet fraudsters killed an officer after opening fire on a team of anti-graft officers in Anambra on Friday, according to the Peoples Gazette.
The officers were on a mission to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals known as Yahoo Boys when they were met with lethal force on Friday morning, according to The Gazette.
According to The Gazette, one officer was shot and killed on the spot, while another sustained serious injuries and was still in critical condition on Friday night.
The officers had left their zonal headquarters in Enugu to travel to Anambra for the assignment.
According to an official, a male suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder. His identity was not immediately revealed, and whether he had consulted a lawyer remained unknown.
.When contacted by The Gazette, an EFCC spokesman stated that he would learn more about the incident. A police spokesman in Anambra did not immediately respond.
The attack occurred as Chairman Ola Olukoyede was recalibrating the agency's protocol for raiding white-collar criminals. .Previously, the Yahoo Boys were largely known to be unarmed and thus easily arrested.
The deceased officer was identified as an assistant superintendent who had recently passed a promotional exam. The Gazette has withheld his identity until his family is officially notified.
Anti-graft agents expressed concern about the development, with some telling The Gazette that the agency's personnel insurance had been ineffective for years.
“We no longer have life insurance,” an officer said under anonymity to discuss internal administrative policies. “The last time family members of an officer who died on duty were compensated was under Farida Waziri.”
“So the families of the officer that died today won’t be getting anything,” another officer added. “So can we say he died for nothing?”
