Lt. Commander Eyieofe Ekah, and victim |
Olumayowa Akogun-Abudu, a military veteran and a chairmanship aspirant for Ojo Local Government election under Labour Party, has condemned the beating of OSFC3 Uzorh KA and 17 others by Lt. Cdr. Ekah at Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS), BEECROFT, Apapa, Lagos State.
Olumayowa disclosed this to newsmen on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, after the incident occurred.
Olumayowa said, I am disappointed in the decision by Lt. Cdr. Ekah, the Regulating Officer (RO) in NNS BEECROFT, to subject OSFC3 Uzorh KA and 17 other personnel to flogging for arriving late to parade mustering on Saturday, January 18, 2025. OSFC3 Uzorh KA is currently undergoing a course, and while punctuality is a key element of naval discipline, I believe this punitive measure is highly inappropriate and excessive.
He said despite that, flogging as a disciplinary action is outdated and inconsistent with the values and principles of a modern naval force. It not only undermines the dignity of the individuals involved but also risks demoralizing the affected personnel and their peers. Such actions can have long-term negative effects on morale, teamwork, and the trust between leadership and subordinates.
The further said that it is also essential to consider whether mitigating circumstances contributed to the delay. Late arrival, while not acceptable, does not justify corporal punishment, especially when alternative corrective measures such as counselling, warnings, or extra duties are available and better suited to maintaining discipline and professionalism.
"I strongly request that this incident be thoroughly investigated and that measures are put in place to ensure that discipline is enforced in a manner that upholds the respect and dignity of naval personnel. Furthermore, I urge that Lt. Cdr. Ekah's decision be reviewed to determine its appropriateness and adherence to naval regulations," he said.
"Discipline is critical to the operational efficiency of the Navy, but it must be balanced with fairness, respect, and adherence to the principles of justice. I trust that you will address this matter with the seriousness it warrants and take steps to prevent the recurrence of such actions in the future," Olumayowa added
