Olumayowa Akogun-Abudu, a military veteran and Ojo Local Government chairmanship aspirant for 2025, has shared his concerns on misappropriation and mismanagement of funds generated from the launch of Army emblem.
Olumayowa disclosed this to journalists on Thursday, December 26th, 2024, at his residence in Ojo Local Government, Lagos State.
He said, "There are disturbing allegations surrounding the mismanagement of funds generated from the yearly Nigerian Army emblem launch, which are meant to support veterans. Instead, it appears that these funds are being diverted for other purposes, leaving many veterans to suffer in poverty.
"The Nigerian Legion, established to host veterans, has allegedly been compromised under the leadership of Major General AbdulMalik Jubril Rtd. Civilians without prior military experience are joining the legion and participating in events, such as the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, alongside actual veterans. This adulteration of the legion's original purpose is unacceptable and demands investigation.
Key Concerns:
Misappropriation of Emblem Funds: Proceeds from the yearly emblem launch are not being utilized to support veterans as intended.
Adulteration of the Nigerian Legion: Civilians without military experience are joining the legion and participating in events, compromising the organization's original purpose.
Lack of Transparency and Accountability: There is a need for a thorough investigation into the management of emblem funds and the operations of the Nigerian Legion.
Demands:
A proper investigation by the federal government and defence headquarters into the misappropriation of emblem funds.
An investigation into the adulteration of the Nigerian Legion and the participation of civilians in events.
Action to redeem the image of military veterans and ensure that the Nigerian Legion returns to its original purpose.
Maj. Gen. Abdulmalik Jubril, Rtd kept pushing to have military veterans palliative funds in his possession till the payment seems almost impossible and efforts reaching the ministry of humanitarian affairs proved abortive.
