The Nigeria Customs Federal Operative Unit (FOU) Agbara, under one UC Gawi's command, has killed one person suspected to be a customs officer and intercepted 180 bags of rice in it recent chase in Ikoga-Zebbe Badagry, Lagos State.
The customs officer had earlier visited the area on Tuesday morning on the trace of rice smugglers but couldn't find any of them, a source told News Peddlers.
The officers came back later in the evening at about 4pm tracing the smugglers, and they saw them along Ikoga Road, then they started chasing them through the community, firing gunshots sporadically.
When they got to the Ikoga market, the smugglers fled, leaving the smuggled rice in the vehicle behind, and then the officers continued to fire guns at the driver who was running away until a stray bullet hit one of the officers, who was rushed to the hospital."
An unconfirmed report said the officer died.
Another eyewitness who spoke with News Peddlers said the person that was killed is not an officer but is one of the boys that followed the customs officers.

He added that the customs since last month till now customs have ceased their vehicles and over 1000 bags of rice.
In June, the same Gawi's command killed a suspected smuggler, Saka Idowu Wakilu, who was called upon to mediate between the customs and the smugglers. Getting there, the customs officers fired gun at Wakilu in an attempt to escape when their discussion gun saw, then the customs officer shot Wakilu in the back.
After Wakilu fell on the floor, the people pleaded that he should be released for treatment, but the customs took him with them until Wakilu died.
