National Union of Lagos State Students (NULAS) Lagos State University chapter has presented awards of honour to Hon. Solomon Saanu Bonu, the House of Assembly Member representing Badagry Constituency I and Chairman House Committee on Tourism Art and Culture at Eko Legislative Conference.
The event held at Lagos State University Ojo on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, was themed: Honouring Our Parliamentary Legacy: Tributes to Lagos Heritage.
At the event, a keynote lecture was delivered by Comrade David Sunday Aladeotan, Vice Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos West Senatorial District, on behalf of Hon. Solomon, who said, "I stand before you today, deeply honoured to pay tribute to our rich cultural heritage and parliamentary legacy. As a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly and Chairman of the House Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, I am proud to celebrate our state's storied history, its people, and their achievements."
He further said Lagos, the Centre of Excellence, has a unique cultural identity, shaped by its strategic location, diverse population, and complex history. From its early days as a thriving trading port to its current status as a megacity and economic hub, Lagos has always been a beacon of progress and innovation. Our State's cultural heritage is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and determination of our people.
"It is an honour to stand before you today to pay tribute to the rich heritage of Lagos State and discuss the pivotal roles of the legislative arm in shaping its development. The theme, "Honouring Our Past, Strengthening Parliamentary Legacy," underscores the profound impact of legislative actions on the growth of Lagos State, particularly through the enactment of bills and the passage of budgets." Aladeotan said.
He pointed out that, the legislative arm of government often operates behind the scenes, yet its influence on the progress of Lagos State can not be overstated. From the early days of colonial governance to the vibrant democracy we cherish today, lawmakers have been instrumental in translating aspirations into reality. They serve as the bedrock upon which policies are crafted, debated, and ultimately transformed into laws to impact every facet of our lives.
"Let us reflect on how the legislative arm has propelled Lagos State forward. Through the introduction and passage of crucial bills, legislators have addressed diverse challenges, from infrastructural development to social welfare improvements. Each piece of legislation represents a milestone, reflecting a collective commitment to advancing the welfare and prosperity of our people.
"As we honour the heritage Lagos State today, we must also look forward to optimism and determination. The challenges of tomorrow demand innovative legislative solutions that build upon our past achievements. Embracing technological advancements, promoting inclusive governance, and safeguarding our cultural identity are essential parameters as we navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing world," he added.
