Abudu Akinlola Olumayowa, the military veteran and aspirant Lagos State House of Assembly in 2023 general elections, has revealed that for a security operative to have shot an unarmed civilian in the back, it is not in self-defence but an act of murder.
More information has been released regarding the gruesome killing of suspected smuggler Idowu Wakilu on Sunday in Erekiti Badagry, Lagos State.
An eyewitness told a journalist on Tuesday that "Idowu Wakilu was shot on his back three times as he was attempting to escape" after a smuggling operation went sour. "After appealing for hours that the Customs should release Wakilu for treatment, he was taken to Army Barack Ibereko and was kept there until he died before his corpse was taken to Badagry General Hospital."
Mayowa said, "If the Customs had said Wakilu confronted or attacked them, how come he was shot in the back, and why was the Army there with the Customs in the first place since it's not that the Army was called upon as a reinforcement after an unsuccessful operation?
Further findings reveal that UC Muhammad Gawi, the Customs officer who led the operation, had in May led an operation to the area, where he intercepted 2,500 bags of rice, which were said to have been traced and discovered to have been sold out to the market by the Customs officers.
The relatives of Idowu Wakilu are requesting the release of Wakilu's corpse because he was murdered intentionally by the officers.
Adejoke Olamide, the wife of Wakilu, has said the Customs should please release the corpse of her husband for proper burial.
The relative who spoke with journalists said, "The Customs officer was pressuring him to sign an undertaking that the family will not press further charges in court confirming that his brother was killed intentionally."
