Nigerian Army mounting checkpoint in Badagry assaults student, Sustains Eye Injury

The men of Nigerian army mounting checkpoint in Badagry West LCDA, has assaulted Asogun Gabriel, a student of Kankon Senior Secondary School, where he sustained injuries on his eyes.


In an official press release made available on social media on Thursday by Ajande Pascal the Speaker National Association of Badagry West Students (NABWES).


The incident occurred on March 27, 2024, at Kumat Soldiers Checkpoint in Gedu Community, Owode Apa, Badagry West LCDA. Where Asogun Gabriel of Gedu Community, a student at Kankon Senior Secondary School, sustained injuries after being assaulted by unidentified military personnel who claimed what happened was not intentional.


The speech reads:

A student of Kankon Senior Secondary School was reportedly subjected to physical assault and injury by a Nigerian army soldier.


The incident centred around Asogun Gabriel, a student from Gedu community, who sustained injuries when inadvertently struck with a stick by a soldier stationed at the checkpoint. The soldier clarified that the act was unintentional. As he pursued another motorbike, he raised his stick in the air, unaware that another bike carrying Gabriel was behind him. Consequently, Gabriel was struck on the face, near his eyes, resulting in minor injuries while the soldier was about to bring the stick down. 


Upon being informed of the incident, Speaker Rt. Hon. AJANDE PASCAL VIWEAVO promptly took action, personally visiting the scene to assess the situation.


To ensure appropriate measures were implemented, he engaged with Officer Emmanuel, the squad's head, who provided the aforementioned explanation and pledged preventive measures for future incidents.


Asogun Gabriel received immediate and adequate medical attention at the Nigeria Air Force Hospital, with all expenses covered by the Army.


The Speaker reaffirmed the commitment to safeguarding students' rights, emphasizing its paramount importance to NABWES.


This incident underscores the imperative of upholding students' rights and safety within the community. The swift response by Speaker Rt. HON. AJANDE PASCAL VIWEAVO
