Juan Ignacio, a historian from Argentina, has suggested government interventions as solutions to improve tourism in Badagry, Lagos State.

He disclosed this to News Peddlers on Friday during his visit to the historical town of Badagry with his team of four members.

The tourists said there is a need for government interventions to improve the tourism sector of Badagry, suggesting that experts be employed to redesign the site and educate the tour guards to standards that can be compared to tourist sites in other countries in West Africa.

"To achieve this, you need scientific expertise to recreate the sites and educate the curators to professionalise these places, which requires huge money, which should be done by the government, but sometimes the government is not interested because the museums are for some people and not for the majority, as the money made there is not going to the government purse."

He said "In Europe, you have museums everywhere, and they are well developed museums. To attract more tourists, the site in Badagry has to be developed and pay good salaries to the curators.

"If you compare the Badagry slave museums to those in Benin Republic and Ghana, you discover that Badagry museums are not rich enough and difficult to compare them. However, the way they tell their stories and how the relics are preserved, I think, is good," Juan said.

He also apologies on behalf of his ancestors for their role in Slavery in Africa, he described it as painful act.

"As a white man, it's very painful. What our ancestors did to the Africans was painful. All we can do is just to cry and say sorry, and try not to repeat it again, as slavery can be likened to the Holocaust," he added.
