There was uproar today in Lagos' Berger area after a moving tanker crushed a hawker to death on the Otedola bridge.
During the tragic accident, a diesel-laden tanker with the licence plate GME 483XD rammed into three moving vehicles, according to Naija News.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the accident in a statement made available to the media. He said the accident occurred after the tanker suffered a mechanical fault while in motion.
As of this writing, the victim's identity, a female hawker, had not been confirmed.
"Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a Tanker fully loaded with Deisel [60,000 litres] had crushed a female pedestrian (Hawker) on Otedola Bridge inward Berger."
"Further investigation by the LRT revealed that the articulated truck with registration number GME 483XD suffered a mechanical fault (brake failure) and rammed into other ongoing vehicles (Suzuki with registration number EPE_302HR and a Toyota Camry reg number MUS242HM, Avalolon AYE 453SF),"
"The LRT, in collaboration with NPF, LASAMBUS, FRSC, LASTMA officials, and RRS, is currently on the ground to salvage the situation," according to the statement.
The LASEMA chief added that the operation at the accident site was still ongoing.
