Vice President Kashim Shettima |
On Friday, Vice President Kashim Shettima apologised to Nigerian Muslims for his remarks regarding the National Assembly leadership race.
Shettima has stated that for the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the most incompetent Southern Christian is preferable to the most pious Northern Muslim in the run-up to Tuesday's election for the 10th Assembly.
His remarks sparked outrage and sparked debate, particularly on social media and among the Muslim community.
Shettima claimed, however, that he made the remarks in the best interest of Nigeria because he had access to information that he was unable to share with the general public in an interview with BBC Hausa.

The vice president insisted that he has no animosity towards Islam, pointing out that he was quoted out of context.
Shettima said, "I am a human who is bound to make mistakes; as such, I seek your forgiveness and God's forgiveness.
He added that given the political trajectory in Nigeria, it was important for those in leadership roles to speak out against dividing the nation and warning against disunity.
According to the Vice President, he is a devout Muslim whose ancestors have practiced Islam for a very long time. He claims he has no desire to disparage anyone.
