According to the United States and Saudi Arabia, the warring parties in Sudan have agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire that will begin on Sunday.

The U.S. and Saudi Arabia were to mediate a ceasefire between the Sudanese army and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that was scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) and end on Wednesday.

"The parties agreed that during the ceasefire, they will refrain from prohibited movements, attacks, use of military aircraft or drones, artillery strikes, reinforcement of positions, and resupply of forces, and will refrain from seeking military advantage during the ceasefire,” the U.S. embassy in Khartoum said.

“They also agreed to allow the unimpeded movement and delivery of humanitarian assistance throughout the country.”

After a protracted power struggle between vice president Mohammed Hamdan Daglo and de facto president Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, violence unexpectedly erupted in Sudan in mid-April.

Since then, there have been numerous cease-fires, but they have consistently been broken.

Initially, in 2021, the two generals had seized control together.

More than 2.2 million people have been displaced by the fighting, according to UN statistics.

On Friday, UN agencies reported that 4 million children and pregnant or nursing mothers are severely undernourished and that nearly 25 million people in the nation require humanitarian aid.
