Upon the invitation of Ghanaian President Nana Akuffo-Ado, President Muhammadu Buhari will attend the third extraordinary meeting of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Gulf of Guinea Commission in Accra, Ghana.

The event in Ghana will be the president's sixth overseas trip of 2023, and he will leave Abuja on Tuesday for it.

On Monday, his spokesman Femi Adesina issued a statement with the heading "Maritime Security, President Buhari will attend Gulf of Guinea Heads of State and Government in Ghana."

The statement revealed that “Buhari will participate and deliver remarks at the high-level discussion on strategies for strengthening peace and security in the fight against maritime-related crimes in the region”.

Together with other senior government officials, President Buhari will travel with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the National Security Advisor, Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno (retired), and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar.

In addition, as the Assembly's most recent Chair, Buhari promoted joint efforts to combat and prevent piracy among the member states in the area, the Economic Community of Central African States, the Economic Community of West African States, the Gulf of Guinea Commission, and their allies.

The Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act, 2019, which aims to prevent and suppress piracy, armed robbery, and other unlawful activities against a ship, was also passed by Nigeria's 10th National Assembly in June 2019.
