Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu |
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has donated N100 million to traders at the burnt Akere Motor Parts and Allied Market in the state's Olodi Apapa area.
Mr Sanwo-Olu, who visited the burned-out site on Wednesday, also laid the groundwork for a new multi-story market.
On Wednesday, an inferno destroyed the Akere Auto Spare Parts Market in Olodi Apapa, Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, destroying goods and properties worth millions of naira.
The governor went to the scene of the incident and promised to help the traders recover their losses.
He stated that the efforts were made to assist traders who had lost goods and cash in the fire.
"We promised to return here a week or so ago to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the unfortunate incident. This isn't politics; the fact that it's election season is just a coincidence.
"I'm delighted to be here to lay the groundwork for the new market building. Now it's a two-story structure, and the small compensation will alleviate the suffering and loss of our traders here," he explained.
Mr Sanwo-Olu stated that the compensation was intended to demonstrate that his administration was not ethnically or religiously biased.
"It's for us to make a clear stand that we are not about the ethnic or religious division, we are a government that is people-centred and working to make things better for them, no matter what party or where they come from.
"As long as they are law-abiding, keep to laws guiding the environment, and respect the heritage of where they do business, they will always be accommodated.
"This will also send a clear message to those who want to divide us that we will not let a small number of people divide a large number of people; we will not give them a space in Lagos or our government," Mr. Sanwo-Olu said.
Fatai Ayoola, chairman of the Ajeromi-Ifelodun LCDA, thanked the governor for keeping his promise to help the people.
Mr. Ayoola promised that they would return the favour by voting for him on Saturday.
In his response, Izuchukwu Uba, chairman of Akere Auto Spare Parts Market, thanked Mr. Sanwo-Olu for his gesture and promised that the traders' votes would go to the governor.
