Protesters in Kenya

Opposition demonstrators thronged Nairobi, Kenya's capital city, to continue their protests on Thursday,  against the outcome of last year's general election, which President William Ruto won.

In August 2022, the East African country held general elections to select its president, governors, and legislators for the national and county assemblies.

According to the official results reported by the BBC, William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was declared the winner of the presidential election, with 50.5 percent of the vote at 7,176,141 votes, defeating his opponent Raila Odinga of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, who received 6,942,930 votes.

Mr Odinga, who had previously rejected the election results, has since challenged them, claiming that the process was fraudulent.

However, some supporters of Mr Odinga continued their third wave of protests against the outcome of the presidential elections, which began on Monday, according to the Voice of America (VOA).

According to the report, violence broke out after protesters threw stones at police in the state capital, with attackers setting fire to a ruling party office in a western town of Nairobi.

Protesters have accused Mr Ruto of mismanagement, while his supporters have accused Mr Odinga of exploiting global anger over rising prices to press for political concessions and a possible role in government.

On Thursday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua addressed the protesters and urged them to leave.

"We're telling our elder Raila Odinga that the only way to get into government is by voting," Mr Gachagua said.
