The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has bowed to public pressure and directed Deposit Money Banks to collect old N500 and N1,000 notes from customers.
As a result, any Nigerian with old N500 and N1000 notes can now take them to banks. Many Nigerians stormed the CBN offices early this morning, demanding that the apex bank collect their old notes.
Yes, we have directed them to collect the old N500 and N1000 from customers, according to a top CBN official.
Remember that President Muhammadu Buhari directed that the old N500 and N1,000 notes are no longer legal tender, but those who have them should take them to the CBN to avoid losing their money.
As a result, the CBN launched a portal where people with old N500 and N1,000 notes could register how much they wanted to deposit and receive a reference code to confirm their registration. The reference code will be used to deposit the old notes at any of the country's CBN offices.
However, an investigation revealed that the CBN may have allowed banks to collect the old notes from their customers in response to the large number of people who descended on its offices to deposit the old N500 and N1,000 notes.
A top bank official and branch head told Vanguard that the branch will collect old notes from customers tomorrow Saturday because it was closed today due to the threat of an attack.
