Chief Ikedi Ohakim

Chief Ikedi Ohakim, a former governor of Imo State, narrowly escaped death on Monday, even though four of his Police Escorts were killed when his convoy was attacked by gunmen.

Ohakim, who ruled Imo State from 2007 to 2011, was assassinated on Monday evening in Oriagu, Ehime Mbano local government area.

Ohakim, who escaped unharmed, had his backup vehicle bombed, killing four police officers in his convoy.

Leadership News correspondent learned that Ohakim was returning from a visit with two of his children when the gunmen struck.

According to a source close to the former governor, it was the bravery of his driver that allowed him to escape the attack.

"His Excellency was the main target, but his driver was smart enough to beat them because they were driving to block him," the source said.

"Disappointed that their main target had escaped, they blocked and burned his backup vehicle. The four cops who were with him were also burned."

According to Leadership source, a reinforcement arrived from Owerri, the state capital, and escorted Ohakim to his home.

When contacted by phone, Michael Abattam, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO)'s phone rang repeatedly with no response.
