Honorable Hunwi Solomon Sewanu and his family celebrated the new year with children at Hephzibah orphanage home on Sunday, at Ibereko Badagry Lagos State.

In his address, he disclosed that he has been generating the first Sunday of the year for the past 40 years.

“To God be the glory we have been celebrating the first Sunday for the past 40 years, but I had the thought of celebrating it differently from the way I celebrate it in the past. That was how I got the thought of celebrating with the less privileged, which was why I came here for to seek permission which was granted."

"I decided to make it colorful by sewing 'Aso Ebi' for everyone including myself, which we all wore here today. We just want to make it known that it’s not by our power or might that we have lived or gone so far in life and we are able to sustain ourselves. There are people out there that could not feed themselves three times daily, and they are human like us which is why we are here.

He clarified that the program is nothing related to politics, and that "as a Rotarian in Rotary, we search for less privilege and try to change their lives, that spirit led me to do this".

"The fact is that, those who have the money don’t think about things like this. I believe I should have been doing this years back when I was in service, but to God be the glory it’s not too late," Hon. Hunwi said.

I hope to do beyond the motherless baby home to others that are less privileged. I appreciate those that are taking care of the kids, for not taking care of them selfishly. The first day I came here I met the kids well-fed and beautifully dressed.

He commended the efforts of the caregivers at the orphanage home for being sincere in their job.

"I’m sorry to say this If it was to be a government establishment, some of the things brought for the kids would have been carted away by the staff. But I don’t think such is happening here that is why the children are looking vibrant and active."

Mrs Joke Hunwi the wife of honorable Hunwi said she loves the new way of celebrating the new year.

"I am very happy to be among these children today and I love the way we come here to celebrate with them. I so much prefer this to the ones we previously celebrated at home, I want this to continue."

Chinyere Okafor the senior caregiver, said "I’m so happy for what Hon. Hunwi is doing to our children here. Yesterday some people came from Lagos to do something similar to this, may God bless you.

"Most times individuals and companies donate cash and food items to the children. The tree of life, the owners of this place always send huge amounts of money for taking care of the children," she added.
