Gafaru Buraimoh, 31, of Land Estate, Ajah, was shot dead by a police officer attached to the Ajah Divisional Police Lagos State Command.
Gafaru Buraimoh was hit by a stray bullet as he exited SkyMall on Tuesday around 10:00 p.m.
The shooting that killed Buraimoh occurred while police officers from Ajiwe Divisional Police in Ajah were raiding people selling black market fuel at the Ajiwe filling station.
However, trouble began when police attempted to impound a black marketer's fuel, which he refused.
His defiance enraged the officers, who began shooting indiscriminately.
According to Muyideen, the deceased brother who spoke to Vanguard, the incident occurred yesterday around 10:00 p.m.
"The police wanted to arrest those who sell illegal goods on the black market, and they began shooting because they refused to allow them to impound their fuel.
Unfortunately, Buraimoh was exiting SkyMall when he was hit by a stray bullet."
The deceased's father lamented, "I was at home when they called me this morning and said I should come, that my son was shot. CSP Mustapha, the DPO, stated that they will look into the matter."
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer at Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident, saying, "The officer responsible for the shooting, an Inspector of Police, was immediately disarmed and detained, and a full-scale investigation has begun."
Hundeyin went on to say that "the Lagos State Police Command, through Area Commander Elemoro and Divisional Police Officer Ajah, had notified and made contact with the family."
While commiserating with the deceased's family over the avoidable and tragic incident, the Command assures that he already begun investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be completed quickly and conclusively, while also ensuring that justice is served."
