Babajide Sanwo-Olu Lagos State Governor |
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has announced a tuition fee cut of 65% for state-owned universities as he ramps up campaign activities for his reelection in 2023.
The gesture will benefit students at Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The varsities' administrations had proposed N195,000 for tuition before Mr. Sanwo-Olu slashed the fees by 65%.
Tokunbo Wahab, the governor's special adviser on education, stated that the administration will continue to support both universities and help them become some of the best in Nigeria.
Okeychukwu David, president of the students' union government (SUG) at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, expressed delight at the news.
Mr. Okeychukwu stated that he was concerned about his educational pursuit because many of his classmates were unable to continue their education due to financial constraints.
Aderemi Balogun, a LASUSTECH student, said students were ecstatic about the news.
"We are delighted to hear the news," he added, "because expectations had been high that the government would raise the fees since the schools were converted to universities." We are grateful to Mr. Governor for the reduced tuition and the ongoing infrastructure projects on our campus."
Mr. Sanwo-Olu will run for re-election in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress after his four-year term ends in May. His more youthful rival, Abdulazeez 'Jandor' Adediran of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, has been working tirelessly to gain acceptance among rural Lagosians and youths affected by Mr. Sanwo-harsh Olu's economic policies.
