The Ogun State Police Command says its officers have arrested a 49 years old man from No 4, Oguji Street, Obantoko in Abeokuta, for bathing with blood at a community river in the Kotopo area of Odeda Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued by the police public relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in Abeokuta, the state capital, the suspect was arrested when members of the community spotted him at the river bank where he parked his Nissan commercial vehicle, came out with a local sponge and a container filled with blood, and began bathing with it.
"As soon as he realised that some people were watching him, he took to his heels, but was pursued and apprehended by community members," he said on Thursday.
Following his arrest, a member of the community called the police at Aregbe divisional headquarters, and the Divisional Police Officer, Superintendent of Police, Bunmi Asogbon, quickly led the patrol team to the scene where the suspect was arrested.
"During questioning, the suspect claimed to have a spiritual problem and that a herbalist had instructed him to perform the ritual. He also claimed that the blood in his possession is not human blood, but cow blood," the statement continued.
Lanre Bankole, the state Commissioner of Police, has ordered that the remaining blood be sent to a laboratory for analysis to determine whether it is human blood or not.
