Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State health commissioner Akin Abayomi |
According to Lagos State government health commissioner Akin Abayomi, N200 million has been set aside to fund indigenous health research.
Mr Abayomi made the announcement in Lagos at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research's 2022 Annual International Conference on Health Advances, Innovation, and Research (ICHAIR) (NIMR).
ICHAIR is a gathering of biomedical professionals and stakeholders from Nigeria and elsewhere.
"Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has given us N200 million to support indigenous local research in the state." We are currently reviewing the applications that have been submitted in order to shortlist the applicants, and the grant winners will be announced next month," Mr Abayomi stated.
"This will kickstart the process for health research, innovations, and medical advances," the health commissioner added. "The governor also contributed N300 million to COVID-19 research, which resulted in 40 journal articles and was made possible through collaboration with various health institutions such as NIMR."
The commissioner also stated that plans were in the works to establish a state intellectual property desk.
"We're working on an intellectual property desk because it's important for our researchers to understand the value of their intellectual work," he explained.
Mr. Abayomi urged researchers in the country to conduct research that will provide solutions to problems unique to our field.
