On Wednesday, an oil truck caught fire in Lagos, killing one person and injuring the driver.

The empty tank caught fire after the driver lost control due to reckless driving in the state's lone accident near the Mushin axis.

According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Wednesday, the incident occurred at about 2:16 a.m. on Wednesday in Alakara, Mushin area of Lagos State.

According to the rescue agency, the tanker driver was rescued and rushed to the hospital for treatment, but his assistant died immediately.

"The timely recovery operation was in response to the Agency's distress call at 02:16a.m, followed by a quick arrival time at Alakara, Mushin Bus Stop at 02:25a.m."

"The Agency's prompt response prevented fire outbreaks and other secondary incidents at the accident scene, as well as the swift recovery of the yet-to-be-identified Truck Assistant who died in the accident," said agency boss Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

According to Mr Oke-agency, Osanyintolu's LASEMA and other sister agencies have cordoned off the area to prevent secondary crashes.

He also stated that the truck assistant's body had been turned over to police officers at Alakara Police Station.

"The bagged commodity (the Truck Assistant's remains) was also handed over to the Police Officers on the scene for further processing," Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said.
