The Policewoman, CP Abiodun Alabi, Hunwathan |
Anu Hunwathan, a chartered accountant, has accused a policewoman of assaulting him and tearing his clothes during an altercation at the Badagry Roundabout in Lagos State's Badagry area.
On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, Hunwathan said he and the cop got into an argument after she demanded a N100 bribe from a taxi driver.
The University of Lagos graduate explained that his wife had just given birth and he was looking for blood when the taxi he was riding in was stopped by the woman, who allegedly threatened to impound the vehicle if the bribe was not paid.
Hunwathan claimed the officer turned on him when he refused to get out of the car, adding that she grabbed him, tore his clothes, and threatened to arrest him.
"My wife has been in the hospital since October 25," he explained. "By the grace of God, they were able to perform CS on her. But I had to leave the hospital to get some items that the doctor had requested. I spoke with the doctor in charge of the hospital laboratory, who informed me that there was a blood shortage.
"I was on my way to where I was supposed to get the blood when they called and said they had just received some supplies in their blood bank and I didn't need to go anywhere else.
"On my way back to the hospital, I boarded a taxi with three other passengers. When we arrived at the Badagry Roundabout, we were met by three police officers who stopped the vehicle. When a female officer approached us, the man was forced to park in the middle of the road.
"The female officer from the Badagry Police Division requested that everyone come down because the vehicle had been impounded. Others got out of the car, but I told her I couldn't because I had something important to attend to.
"The police officers threatened me and called me various names, but I stood my ground. I told her I wasn't coming down.
"I alighted from the vehicle when the threat was great and the driver was unwilling to give up. She took her phone to take a picture of me as I alighted, but I ignored her. I was leaving on my own when she charged at me, grabbed my neck, and tore my clothes.
"Extortion has been going on for a long time at that intersection, and the driver actually had a problem with her because he refused to pay her N100."
The victim demanded justice and called for the officer's arrest and punishment.
Despite three days of attempts, the Lagos Police Public Relations Office, Benjamin Hundeyin, did not take his calls or respond to text messages from our correspondent on the matter.
