According to his wife, Aisha Buhari, President Muhammadu Buhari has done the best he could for Nigeria, though she is unsure if the ex-dictator has met the "high expectations" of Nigerians over the past seven years.
When asked why she recently apologized to Nigerians on behalf of her husband, Mrs. Buhari said she did so because she was not sure Mr. Buhari's regime had met Nigerians' expectations.
"The expectations on us were so high, and perhaps after seven years, we haven't met them." Only God knows what someone's thoughts are," Mrs. Buhari said in an interview published on Friday by BBC Pidgin.
"As a human being, you can't say you're right or that you've done what you should," the Nigerian first lady continued, "so the government has really tried. The administration did its best, but it may not have been the best decision for others. So, whether we met Nigerians' expectations or not, we must apologize."
Mrs. Buhari previously apologized in public, at a special Juma'at service and public lecture to mark Nigeria's 62nd independence anniversary, for her husband's failure to develop the economy after nearly eight years in office.
The first lady acknowledged that the naira's helpless fall during her husband's tenure had caused untold hardship for many citizens. The policies of Godwin Emefiele, who was appointed by Mr. Buhari to lead the Central Bank of Nigeria, had yet to have a positive impact on the economy.
"Your Excellencies, distinguished guests," she said, "it is also noticeable that our naira is being evaluated, and the foreign exchange rate has affected our economy, causing a lot of hardship and difficulties in terms of education, health, and other day-to-day activities of our citizens."
Mr. Buhari and his supporters have repeatedly referred to the incumbent president as the best thing to happen to Nigeria since 1999. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on the other hand, slammed them and other Nigerians who claim Nigeria is doing well under the APC regime, saying their heads should be examined.
