The success of Kunle Afolayan's Netflix film Anikulapo continues to grow. According to Netflix rankings, the film topped the charts of non-English films in its first week of release, and it has now been commissioned to be produced as a series.
Afolayan claims that Netflix, a global streaming platform, has approached him about producing a series based on Anikulapo.
In an interview with Guardian IK on Saturday, the award-winning filmmaker stated that he was confident that 'Anikulapo,' which he had been working on for six years, would become a blockbuster.
'Anikulapo,' set in the 17th century ancient Oyo Kingdom, premiered on Netflix on September 30, 2022, and became the most-watched non-English film on Netflix a week later, with a total of 8.7 million streaming hours.
Afolayan the filmmaker cemented his family's legacy with Anikulapo by including his 17-year-old daughter, Eyiyemi Afolayan, in the film. He stated that his initial plan was to make it into a series, but Netflix persuaded him to make it into a feature film first and then expand to a series if the film was successful.
Anikulapo has been in the works for six years, according to the filmmaker.
"Eventually, Netflix told me to make a movie first because I believed so strongly in the project, and if it was a success, we'd develop a series," Afolayan explained.
"Right now, Netflix is urging me to begin production on the series." I knew we made a great film that would spark debate, but I didn't expect it to do as well as it has."
The film was made in Yoruba and stars A-list actors and actresses like Kunle Remi, Yinka Quadri, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale, and others.
