The Obi-Datti Media Office has mocked a support group affiliated with the Tinubu-Shettima All Progressives Congress Presidential ticket for urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to disqualify the Labour Party's Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, over a fictitious claim of violating the Electoral Act on election funding.
While dismissing the claim as "desolate and baseless," the Obi-Datti Media Office said in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Sunday that the pro-Tinubu group has suddenly realized the futility of continuing with election business as usual.
"All of a sudden, the structure-less and social media candidates are now the headache of the ruling party that they now have to fabricate and imagine things they want the electoral Commission to act on," the statement read in part.
"Obi's successful trip abroad, ostensibly to sensitize and bring Nigerians aboard on his upcoming agenda of rebuilding the country, is open and transparent, and is not a fund-raising trip."
"But we know why it bothers some people: they can't meet Nigerians in diaspora knowing that they helped them leave the country in the first place."
"We have repeatedly stated that their own understanding of structure is the abundance of looted funds in their kitty that they intend to deploy on hungry Nigerian voters during the election to sway their votes."
"They know nobody has the kind of stolen funds they have and are always uncomfortable when anything suggests to them that their opponents could match them," it continued.
"Obi did not go to beg for money, but to sell himself and his mission to Nigerians living outside the country who are key stakeholders in the Nigeria project."
"Since June 2022, when they used a chunk of their loot to secure their party's ticket, the nation's currency has crashed and is still struggling for breath. Since then, they have been amassing foreign currency in order to buy voters ahead of the election."
