A regional police official said on Thursday that Ukrainian authorities discovered a mass grave of more than 440 bodies in the eastern city of Izium that was recaptured from Russian forces, adding that some of the people were killed by shelling and air strikes.
Serhiy Bolvinov, the Kharkiv region's chief police investigator, told Sky News that forensic investigations would be conducted on all bodies.
"I can say it is one of the largest burial sites in a large town in liberated (areas).... 440 bodies were buried in one place," Bolvinov said.
"Some died as a result of artillery fire, while others died as a result of air strikes," he explained. Over the weekend, thousands of Russian troops fled Izium. more info
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy blamed Russia and compared the discovery to what happened in Bucha, on the outskirts of Kyiv, during the early stages of Russia's late February invasion. Ukraine and its Western allies have accused Russian forces of committing war crimes in the country.
"Russia is leaving death everywhere it goes and must be held accountable," Zelenskiy said in a video address.
Russia has denied repeatedly that it targets civilians or commits war crimes.
