The President has been urged to drop the proposal to rename the University of Nigeria Nsukka after Queen Elizabeth University of Nigeria. According to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, other areas of the North, such as Aso Rock in Abuja, would benefit more from such a move.
This came as it was emphasized that Adamu Garba, the former presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party, must apologize to the Ndigbo people for making such an unhistorical remark.
Garba had on Friday advised President Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to rename the UNN in honor of Queen Elizabeth, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 96.
However, in response, the Chidi Ibeh-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo said such a remark was capable of igniting conflict in the nation in a statement by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro.
According to the statement, "the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide warned the Federal Government against renaming the top-ranked and most esteemed university, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, after the late British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
"The University has left a legacy in the southeast of Nigeria, and it would benefit Adamu Garba, a former candidate for the APC presidential nomination, to know that the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, now goes by the name Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre, Umuahia. However, Nigerians have not yet discovered the late Queen Elizabeth's legacies in the north of the country. It is proper for the North to receive a reasonable portion of the Queen's legacy.
"The Federal Government and the Presidency should consider the Queen's contribution by granting Nigeria political freedom and independence on October 1, 1960, if they wish to immortalize the late Queen Elizabeth II. And Aso Rock should be the best location to express gratitude to Great Britain."
