According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the country recorded 48 new cases of monkeypox between August 8 and August 14. (NCDC).
The NCDC said in a statement on its website on Saturday that the new cases had been recorded in 16 states, with Lagos topping the list with 15 cases.
Abia and Ogun each recorded five cases. Benue, Edo, Rivers, and the FCT each had three cases; Bayelsa and Ondo each had two; and Cross River, Anambra, Gombe, Imo, Katsina, Oyo, and Osun each had one.
The latest infections pushed the total number of cases in Nigeria since the start of the year to 220, according to the NCDC, who added that the infections were recorded in 29 states.
It also stated that males accounted for 144 of the 220 infections, while females accounted for the remaining 76.
It went on to say that four monkeypox deaths had been reported in four states: Delta, Lagos, Ondo, and Akwa Ibom.
According to the NCDC, monkeypox has killed a total of 12 people in Nigeria since September 2017.
Since the re-emergence of monkeypox in Nigeria in September 2017, 1,042 suspected cases have been reported across 35 states.
In May 2022, an ongoing outbreak of monkeypox, a viral disease, was confirmed. The first cluster of cases was discovered in the United Kingdom.
Monkeypox is characterized by a rash that may appear on or near the genitals or anus, as well as on other areas such as the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth.
Before healing, the rash will go through several stages, including scabs. The rash may first appear as pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.
