The All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission have been ordered by the Federal High Court in Damaturu to recognize Bashir Machina as the party's Yobe North senatorial candidate.
On June 9, 2022, the presiding judge, Justice Fadima Murtala Aminu, declared the parallel primary election that produced Senate President Ahmed Lawan null and void.
The judge also ordered the APC to forward Machina's name to INEC as the legitimate winner of the May primary.
The decision came just weeks after Machina distanced himself from a notice of withdrawal from the race that had gone viral.
A copy of the notice obtained by PUNCH revealed a letter allegedly written by Machina and addressed to the party's National Chairman, in which he stated his withdrawal from the Yobe North senatorial race.
The PUNCH reported on August 9, 2022, that INEC denied recognising Lawan and Senator Godswill Akpabio as APC senatorial candidates.
Lawan and Akpabio both ran in the APC presidential primaries. However, after losing, the APC listed both of them as senatorial candidates, but INEC refused to recognize them.
According to the PUNCH, Lawan, Akpabio, and Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, chose to run for Senate seats in Yobe North, Ebonyi South, and Akwa Ibom North West, respectively, after losing their presidential primaries.
