ASUU STRIKE: University Staff Commits Suicide Over Financial Challenge

A Nigerian university employee reportedly committed suicide due to his inability to pay his two daughters' school fees.

Carter Oshodin, a non-teaching staff member at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State, South-south Nigeria, was identified as the man by The Nation newspaper on Sunday morning.

Because of the ongoing strike by workers' unions, both teaching and non-teaching staff at UNIBEN, as well as other federal government-owned universities, have not been paid.

Mr Oshodin's union, the Non-Academic Staff Union, had suspended its strike for two months, but their members had yet to be paid for the previous six months.

Mr Oshodin worked as a data entry officer at UNIBEN, according to The Nation.

According to the paper, the man committed suicide on Friday at Umelu in Benin City's Upper Sokponba neighborhood after failing to receive financial assistance from those around him.

According to The Nation, the incident has been confirmed by the police spokesperson in Edo State, Chidi Nwabuzor.

Mr Nwabuzor, a police superintendent, said his family had taken Oshodin's body away.
