The Enugu State Police Command has charged three women with conspiracy, trafficking in newborn twins, and killing their mother.

This was stated by the command's spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement.

The suspects, Ukorie Cynthia (25), Onyia Pauline (56), and Aroh Ijeoma (39) were remanded in the Enugu Maximum Correctional Centre on Friday, according to the statement.

The trio was apprehended by operatives of the command attached to the Central Police Station, Enugu, on July 26, 2022, following complaints that the suspects conspired and sold newborn twins of one Chinenye Odoh, 31.

According to the statement, the suspects did not stop with selling the twins, but also murdered their mother by poisoning her food after she realized the suspects had shortchanged her by giving her less than the amount they sold her babies for.

According to the police, Ukorie Cynthia housed the deceased until she died on 05/07/2022, while Aroh Ijeoma facilitated the sale of the babies by contacting Onyia Pauline, a nurse, who brought a couple who paid three million naira for the babies upon their birth (N3,000,000.00).

"Contrary to this sum, Ijeoma informed the deceased and mother of the babies, Chinenye, that the children were sold for two million, three hundred and fifty thousand naira (N2,350,000.00) and then gave her one million, eight hundred thousand naira (N1,800,000.00); gave Cynthia and Pauline fifty thousand naira (N50,000.00) each; and kept the remaining proceeds for herself."

"However, when the deceased and mother of the babies discovered the exact amount they sold the babies for, she demanded the balance, but was later said to have eaten a suspected poisoned corn given to her by Cynthia, resulting in her death," according to the statement.

The case has been adjourned for trial until October 5, 2022, according to the statement.
