Badagry Persons with Disabilities Issue Urgent Plea to Federal and State Lawmakers

By: Manoah Kikekon

BADAGRY – The Association of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), Badagry Headquarters, has sent a powerful message to elected representatives, demanding an end to the systemic neglect and exclusion of their members from the decision-making process.

In a press conference held on Sunday, 19th April 2026, at the Mammy Market in Ibereko, the association expressed deep disappointment over the lack of engagement from key lawmakers representing the Badagry Federal Constituency.

Reading the official statement, Ekundayo Sejoro, Chairman of the Badagry Chapter, specifically named Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan (House of Representatives), Engr. Setonji David (Lagos State House of Assembly, Constituency I), and Hon. Solomon Saanu Bonu (Lagos State House of Assembly, Constituency II).

The association noted that since these officials assumed office, there has been "limited attention" given to the PwD community despite numerous formal letters, meeting requests, and advocacy efforts.

"Our intention is not to insult or discredit our representatives," Sejoro clarified. "But we must draw attention to the urgent need for a stronger commitment to our welfare. Every citizen, regardless of ability, deserves dignity and equal access to services."

The association highlighted several critical areas where the Badagry Federal Constituency is falling short in terms of disability inclusion. They called on the lawmakers to take proactive steps to address:

Economic Empowerment: Lack of SME support and job opportunities within government institutions.

Infrastructure Accessibility: Inadequate ramps and access in public buildings and new projects.

Educational Support: Insufficient resources for special needs students and teachers in public schools.

Representation: The absence of PwDs in policy-making processes that directly affect their lives.

Assistive Devices: The limited provision of essential tools like wheelchairs, braille materials, and hearing aids.

They were see with placards with inscription that states, Stop Neglect of Persons with Disabilities, End Exclusion of Persons with Disabilities, We Vote too Remember us.

While expressing frustration with state and federal representatives, the association took a moment to commend local government chairmen who have demonstrated a commitment to inclusion.

The group praised Hon. Hunpe Babatunde (Badagry LG) and Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon (APK) (Olorunda LCDA) for appointing Special Advisers on Disability and establishing dedicated disability desks. They also lauded Hon. Rauf Ibrahim Yemaren Rikay (Badagry West LCDA) for his ongoing empowerment programmes specifically tailored for the PwD community.

The press conference concluded with a plea for renewed dialogue. The association emphasized that "meaningful inclusion" is not just about charity, but about ensuring that the over 27 million Nigerians living with disabilities including those in Badagry are treated as active participants in democracy.
