The University of Lagos (UNILAG) community has been plunged into mourning following the sudden passing of Maryam Agoro, a promising Law graduate who died just one day after her graduation ceremony.
The news has sent shockwaves across social media, turning what should have been a season of celebration into a period of deep reflection and grief.
Maryam Agoro was among the hundreds of graduates who celebrated their academic achievements during UNILAG’s 55th Convocation Ceremony on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. However, the joy was short-lived. News of her demise surfaced on Wednesday, January 21, leaving friends, family, and fellow alumni in disbelief.
The news gained traction after an emotional tribute was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as Confidence Ufuoma (@plantcodesss). "You did your convocation yesterday and today you’re no more," the post read. "You deserve to be celebrated and you will be."
Ufuoma’s post hinted at a period of struggle Maryam might have faced prior to her graduation, praising her resilience. She noted that despite being in a "miserable condition" recently, Maryam fought to see her degree through. "I know you’re smiling from where you are because ‘UNILAG didn’t end you.’ You ended UNILAG, in joy," Ufuoma added.
Other social media users have since joined in offering condolences. An X user, @Coachchair007, expressed the collective heartbreak of the graduating class: "May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her loved ones the fortitude to bear this great loss. Can’t believe I’m mourning Maryam when I’m supposed to be celebrating her."
